about

The debut album from The Hicksville Band, recorded in part at Hilltop Studios in Nashville, TN, showcases the songwriting talents of the band members as well as the sublime guitar, slide and pedal steel work. It's not surprising that people automatically assume that they're from the US - rarely has UK country music sounded this authentic!

Track Name: 01 - Me too
Well the website only said that she was lonely
And looking for a guy like me
But the lights were dim and the place was kinda grim
And she stood in the bar as agreed
She was a big tall beauty with a Hicksville booty
And cowgirl's eyes of blue
I said "A coupla cold beers and I'm right out of here"
And her deep voice said "Me too"

Well now I oughta mention that it's not my intention
To bail out when a date goes wrong
But her looks were misleading and my mind kept pleading
Gotta jump through the window of the john
She downed two straight whiskies and her smile grew frisky
I took that as my cue
I said "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"
And her deep voice said "Me too"

Well I realised my error when I looked in the mirror
And saw right through her disguise
Well I don't mind admitting I was still kind of smitten
By the light in her cowgirl's eyes

My heart beat faster as I pushed right past her
She said "Hey boy, what's with you?
I just might be here Saturday night"
And I swear I said "Me too"
Track Name: 02 - She don't know
She don't know if she can stay with you
It might be too much to ask her to do
After all the things you put her through
She don't know if she can stay with you.

She don't know if she can take the pain
There's a good chance things will stay the same
There's no evidence you're gonna change
She don't know if she can take the pain

But if you can change her mind
There's a chance that you will find
Show her that you can be strong
Things'll be different from now on
If she just throws you a line

She might not give her heart to you again
Heaven knows she's tried to make it plain
She gets tired of dealing with the strain
She might not give her heart to you again

But if you can make her see
You know how she wants things to be
Take the time to re-arrange
Show her that you're gonna change
And pray forgiveness is the key

She don't know if she can stay with you
It might be too much to ask her to do
After all the things you put her through
She don't know if she can stay with you.
Track Name: 03 - Broken town
Driving through town in my old truck
Past shops and houses all boarded up
No one in sight at the single stop light
There's the little white church with the picket fence
Where you and I were married just three years since
Now the congregation's gone, all moving on.

Small town life was the dream we had
Big city boys sure put a stop to that
Mister, there ain't nothing you can dp

We tried so hard to make this work
But there's nothing left for us to scratch from this old dirt
Everything's broken down
We don't give up and we don't give in
But we can't stay for ever when there's nothing
No work to go round this broken town

Old man Hale sits in his main street store
But the customers don't come around no more
He hangs the "Sorry, closed" sign for the final time
Susie O'Keefe can't afford her children's clothes
Her old man ran off, the bank's gonna foreclose
She's loading up her van, getting out while she still can

Big business waiting on that golden opportunity
Hard working man's just trying to feed his family
Mister, there ain't nothing we can do

We tried so hard to make this work
But there's nothing left for us to scratch from this old dirt
Everything's broken down
We don't give up and we don't give in
But we can't stay for ever when there's nothing
No work to go round this broken town
Track Name: 04 - Vision of her
He can't forget the way that she looked that day
Prettiest thing he'd ever seen in his life
He took that photograph and she tried not to laugh
He knew he wanted her to be his wife
They walked for hours hand in hand along the beach
And he could feel the sand move beneath his feet

He started falling into the river of loving
Leaping into the torrent, swept away on the current
Dashed against the rocks of emotion, swept out into the ocean
By a vision of her

He can't forget the dress she wore the day that she said "Yes"
The way she smiled and took him by the hand
And in a golden haze, remembering their wedding day
The preacher's words, the church, and two gold bands
And when he woke up in the early morning light
And saw the vision that was lying by his side

He started falling into the river of loving
Leaping into the torrent, swept away on the current
Dashed against the rocks of emotion, swept out into the ocean
By a vision of her

They're bound together now for richer or for poor
The family photos gather in the dresser drawer

He can't forget the way that she looked the day
The doctor said "There's nothing we can do"
She smiled and took his hand, and said "I understand.
The good Lord will look after all of you"
And though she's gone he still love's her just the same
Staring with devotion at a picture in a frame

He started falling into the river of loving
Leaping into the torrent, swept away on the current
Dashed against the rocks of emotion, swept out into the ocean
By a vision of her

He can't forget the way that she looked that day
Prettiest thing he'd ever seen in his life.
Track Name: 05 - Own two feet
She wasn't looking for trouble when she walked into the bar
But she found it shooting pool and sucking on a big cigar
Her trailer was shaking with the love they were making
They were getting it on all night
Three months later on and she's calling him a mother
Looking for her ex-lover with a Louisville Slugger
No more feeling flirty, no more getting down and dirt
'Cos the whole thing's ending in a fight

She says "Don't come knocking on my front door
Thinking I'm gonna let you in
And don't go calling me on my cell
Thinking I'll take you back again
'Cos there'll be pigs flying by on a cold day in Hell
Before I ever let you see that I'm beat
I ain't leanin' on another now, I'm standing on my own two feet

She was playing "Real Housewives" out in West LA
Caught her husband in their bedroom with his new PA
So she razored up his suits and his snakeskin boots
And threw the whole caboodle in the pool
Now she's headed back to momma with her foot down hard
In his Mercedes Benz and with his credit card
She knew that he was lying now she's done some simplifying
He never should have took her for a fool

She says "Don't come knocking on my front door
Thinking I'm gonna let you in
And don't go calling me on my cell
Thinking I'll take you back again
'Cos there'll be pigs flying by on a cold day in Hell
Before I ever let you see that I'm beat
I ain't leanin' on another now, I'm standing on my own two feet

Well she was onlt seventeen, a real Daddies girl
When he pulled up in his truck and tried to rock her world
She was almost taken in, by a dimple and a grin
'Till she found out he was seeing her best friend

She says "Don't come knocking on my front door
Thinking I'm gonna let you in
And don't go calling me on my cell
Thinking I'll take you back again
'Cos there'll be pigs flying by on a cold day in Hell
Before I ever let you see that I'm beat
I ain't leanin' on another now, I'm standing on my own two feet
Track Name: 06 - Daddy don't cry
So excited, you can't wait,
As the car pulls into your new College gate
You in the back, all chatter and smiles
But your Momma's said nothing for the last twenty miles
I guess she feels the way that I do, we've not looked forward to this day
Now it's time to let you go listen up - I got something to say.

Remember what I told you, call your Momma once in a while
Now I want to hold you but i know it's time to let you fly
As I turn to walk away I've got something in my eye
I'm so proud to be your Daddy; and Daddy don't cry

Teenage years passing by in a haze
Can't help thing back to my own College days
Parties all night, the girls who lived opposite
Pizza and beer and a keg in the closet
I guess I feel the way that she does it ain't easy to let go
Now it's time to say goodbye listen up - there's one thing you should know

Remember what I told you, give your faith another try
Now I want to hold you but i know it's time to let you fly
As I turn to walk away I've got something in my eye
I'm so proud to be your Daddy; and Daddy don't cry

Don't wanna make a big scene so we'll drop you off right here
Unload the car and drive away to hide behind your Momma's tears

Remember what I told you, call your Momma once in a while
Now I want to hold you but i know it's time to let you fly
As I turn to walk away I've got something in my eye
I'm so proud to be your Daddy; and Daddy don't cry
Track Name: 07 - Last picture show
Jeanie left home and age eighteen making her way out west
Carrying a bag of dreams of Tinseltown success
Big city nights and neon lights pulled her in with a smile
She felt her destiny calling with each passing mile

She wanted so much more than the things that she left back home
She thought she'd made her escape from that town,
And the last picture show

Waiting on tables and cleaning rooms sure helps focus the mind
While she searched for the break she was sure that she would find
But sometimes alone in the chill of the night
She'd count the passing of years
And struggle to get up the courage to confront her fears

She dreamed of a life played out up there on the big silver screen
She played a minor role with cigarettes and caffeine
She wanted so much more than the things that she left back home
So afraid her only role might be in that last picture show

Sometime's the hardest thing is to know when you're beat
And the only way you can win is to admit defeat

Slowly the camera swings around in one long tracking shot
She's standing there on her hometown main street
As the Greyhound bus drives off
Maybe she's made for the role that she's played
And this is all part of the plot
And there's still time to deliver her lines
Before the Director cries "Cut!"

She dreamed of a life played out up there on that big silver screen
She played a minor role with cigarettes and caffeine
She wanted so much more than the things that she left back home
Now she knows her only role is to star in the last picture show
Track Name: 08 - Comfort in the glass
In love for three years, married for eight
It's a common condition, it's a common state
He wants the thrill of the chase, now the thrill is gone
She want's it all to be like it was when their love was young

Comfort in the glass: rain come falling down
Comfort in the glass: time to buy another round
Comfort in the glass

Time was they loved each other, now that time is gone
They were careless with their love, now it's all gone wrong
They know the end is coming, it's coming soon
You might say they've had their fill at the last chance saloon

Comfort in the glass: rain come falling down
Comfort in the glass: time to buy another round
Comfort in the glass

In love for three years, married for eight
There's just indifference now, no love or hate
Should they stay together for the sake of the kids
Or let it fall apart and just call it quits?

Comfort in the glass: rain come falling down
Comfort in the glass: time to buy another round
Comfort in the glass: when the going gets tough
Comfort in the glass: things are getting rough
Comfort in the glass
Track Name: 09 - Just like you
Down on Broadway, walking slowly, steel guitar sound
Bluebird cafe on a Sunday, stranger in town
How I envy all there people that I see
The way the soundtrack of their lives just talks to me

That's how I feel with my hands on the wheel
As I'm driving through Nashville again
You know the song and you all sing along
As you dance in the Tennessee rain
There's no stripes and no stars on my flag
But it's red, white and blue
Maybe I'm just like you.

Who's headlining at the Ryman? Getting ready to go
Boots are stomping, band is kicking
Down on Music Row
And I'm walking in the steps of Hank and Merle
May the circle be unbroken in my world

That's how I feel with my hands on the wheel
As I'm driving through Nashville again
You know the song and you all sing along
As you dance in the Tennessee rain
There's no stripes and no stars on my flag
But it's red, white and blue
Maybe I'm just like you.
Track Name: 10 - Wreck my bed
I saw you walking in out of the corner of my eye
But I was too busy sinking this cold beer
Then I watched you doe-ce-doe across the floor up to my side
And I heard the words you whispered in my ear
Then you dragged me out in the parking lot
And you made me take you home
I was happy to give in to your demands
But I never for a moment thought I'd ever have to say
That on night with you was all that I could stand

Then you hit me: hit me like a train
Yeah you picked me up and you spun me round
Like a one woman hurricane
Yeah you hit me: like a hammer to my head
Then you went ahead and wrecked my bed.

Well I've always had a thing about a blonde in boots and jeans
But I never seem to get me one of those
But now I got one sitting on my couch r so it seems
And it Lord it looks like you've lost half your clothes
Next thing I know my neighbour's banging loud upon my door
Shouting "Hey boy! What the hell you doin' in there?"
I really didn't think that we was making that much noise
But then again I really didn't care

Because you hit me: hit me like a train
Yeah you picked me up and you spun me round
Like a one woman hurricane
Yeah you hit me: like a hammer to my head
Then you went ahead and wrecked my bed.

I woke up to feeling like i been bucked off a bull
Yeah my body just can't handle all the strain
Then you appear in my T shirt with breakfast on a tray
Saying "Eat up boy, we're gonna go again"

Then you hit me: hit me like a train
Yeah you picked me up and you spun me round
Like a one woman hurricane
Yeah you hit me: like a hammer to my head
Then you went ahead and wrecked my bed.
Track Name: 11 - Another country
This is the place where I used to play,
In those just remembered childhood days
Of summer sun and brown leaves in the fall
An this is house where I used to live
Where family love kept me protected
In arms that held me safe when I was small
And nothing's really changed with the passing of time
Just that post in the front yard with the "For sale" sign

So I drive away alone, turn my back on all the things that I've ever known
And if i never see this place again, why should I care?
The past is another country, and I don't live there.

This the porch where we first kissed
In a moment that left us both speechless
A long goodnight beside that old screen door
And here is the drive where I parked my car
The night we took it a little too far
Going somewhere that we'd never been before
And nothing's really changed on the surface, anyhow
Just another families memories that live here now

So I drive away alone, turn my back on all the things that I've ever known
And if I never see this place again, why should I care?
The past is another country, and I don't live there.

And I can't live on memories now, those days are gone
No looking back, just keep moving along

So I drive away alone, turn my back on all the things that I've ever known
And if i never see this place again, why should I care?
The past is another country, and I don't live there.
Track Name: 12 - Something I live with
I still remember when you
Used to come around when my folks were out
And we would fool around on the couch
Then came the moment when we knew
Everything was pointing to the time
We'd take that big step over the line
But you wanted so much more than I thought really mattered at the time

I watched you drive away in your Momma's Chevrolet
You got your top down and your Ray-Ban's on
Radio playing some old break-up song
I was just a kid and I was seven kinds of stupid
I couldn't see that what you wanted from me
Was so much more than I was gonna give...
That's something i live with.

I thought we were built to last
I never worried 'bout the other things
Besides College and football games
So when you came to me that day
And told me all about the choice you'd made
You know I didn't know what to say
'Cos I didn't understand why you thought we lived in different worlds

I watched you drive away in your Momma's Chevrolet
You got your top down and your Ray-Ban's on
Radio playing some old break-up song
I was just a kid and I was seven kinds of stupid
I couldn't see that what you wanted from me
Was so much more than I was gonna give...
That's something i live with.

I still think about you and me and way back when
Wondering what might have been if I had been less stupid then

I watched you drive away in your Momma's Chevrolet
You got your top down and your Ray-Ban's on
Radio playing some old break-up song
I was just a kid and I was seven kinds of stupid
I couldn't see that what you wanted from me
Was so much more than I was gonna give...
That's something i live with.
